This has been bugging me too for a while. All my .tar.gz attachments can only
be opened once, then I need to manually remove them in /tmp. Maybe an exception
for *.tar.[a-z0-9]{2,3} as was suggested before ?
Or how about adding the numbered suffix to the first text string :
.mozconfig -> .mozcon
I have the same workflow and see the bug as well (also using a Cisco
VPN)

network-manager 0.9.1.90-0ubuntu4 doesn't connect to wireless network
Status in “network-manager” package in Ubunt
Public bug reported:
After upgrading network-manager to 0.9.1.90-0ubuntu4, my laptop doesn't connect
anymore to my wireless AP. I had to downgrade to 0.9.1.90-0ubuntu3 for it to
reconnect (and report this bug)
I get lots of messages like this:
Oct 20 08:34:49 koalowdi kernel: [ 28.045640] ADDR
This seems to happen with other applications as well: terminal, evince,
for instance. Reproduces most of the time. I am wondering if this isn't
the same as bug #876637
