Ah, I forgot to mention that the specifications (page 191-192) describes that both forms are acceptable: http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/download.php/12572/OpenDocument-v1. 0-os.pdf I just need to confirm that OOo does support (and will keep supporting) 'table:number-rows-spanned' attribute.
