I'm getting closer. I found that unity-panel-service wasn't running.
However, I can run it in a terminal window and it works. That is, I get
the date, time, sound and gear icons in the top status bar. E.g.
/usr/lib/unity/unity-panel-service &

Currently the sound indicator shows the playback controls of *each*
music/media player associated with it. I think this adds too much
clutter, and is possibly a waste of space.

the network came up again), (together with PrepareForSleep=true):

I am also getting this bug intermittently on a fully patched Ubuntu
12.04.
Just change the status to new. The released fix apparently never
worked.

Ok, I have setup the dbus monitor (any filter suggestions?), tee'ing to a
logfile.
I have then suspended and resumed (after a minute maybe), and there's no
PrepareForSleep=false in the log, only:

I have the same problem. HUD totally useless now. Since HUD is a critcal part
