I think the regression was caused when getting the HUD ready for the
phone.
I marked it as "Won't Fix" for indicator-sound because it would need to

As a workaround, you can change the key in dconf editor and restart the

It's unlikely that the volume is reset by the sound menu. I can't check
what is doing it myself right now, as I don't have a sim card in my
device. So could you please:
1. turn on debugging for pulse-audio by adding the line "log-level = debug" to
~/.config/pulse/daemon.conf
2. restart pulseaudio

I assume by "recording" you mean reading from an microphone source? (I
can't imagine any other way to figure out if an application is
recording.)
Also, I'm not sure whether turning the icon red is enough to convey "an
application is using the microphone". Maybe we can get some design input
before
