I use advise #8. I uninstall unity-scope-home and again install it.
WARNING: I was not able install unity-scope-home from software-center. I had to
download unity-scope-home_6.8.2+13.10.20131003-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb from

@prabhath: Did you already have 'unity-scope-home' installed or did you
have 'unity-scope-github' installed and you replaced it with 'unity-
scope-home'? If you already had 'unity-scope-home' installed, did you
uninstall it and then re-install it?
Thanks!
Peace...

nothing that matches your search" message when I first open Dash and
there's nothing in the search box, if I enter something, like "Calc" or

I also started having this problem after upgrading from Ubuntu 13.04
(64-bit) to 13.10. I checked and I also have unity-scope-home

change the status from Invalid back to New?

Resolved! I've installed unity-scope-github which "silently" removed
unity-scope-home (because I've installed it via Software Center). After
reinstalling unity-scople-home (and uninstalling unity-scope-github)
everything is back in the Launcher!
