After the above commands were executed my proper background appeared, and the mouse worked as it should. I shut down to make sure, and upon starting the system again I have the correct background as well as a working mouse. The right click on the background brings up a small menu which it did not

No that did not help. The problem with mouse clicks remains, also clicking the touch pad is not responded to. This is within Unity, in an app clicking works Ok i.e Firefox or VirtualBox etc. I also cannot change the appearance even though the appearance app shows the new background. As far as I
