After the above commands were executed my proper background appeared,
and the mouse worked as it should. I shut down to make sure, and upon
starting the system again I have the correct background as well as a
working mouse. The right click on the background brings up a small menu
which it did not

No that did not help.
The problem with mouse clicks remains, also clicking the touch pad is
not responded to. This is within Unity, in an app clicking works Ok i.e
Firefox or VirtualBox etc.
I also cannot change the appearance even though the appearance app shows
the new background.

Try to remove the directory ~/.config/compiz-1 or something similar.
Sorry but when there are this kind of configuration issue is hard to
debug the issue without direct access. Also usually it's not our fault,
but of the upgrader or other external tools.

There are some parts missing in this Unity, one is that I cannot shut
down apps such as Firefox and Thunderbird, also the shutdown button does
not respond until I move the pointer to the extreme left top, then all 4
workspaces appear and when I move the pointer to an icon in the launcher
the previo
I now have a complete Unity screen including panel with all the icons.
I do believe that the "--replace" above did not finish as indicated in
the terminal listing above, Which might be the reason i cannot find the
unity log.
Terminal hung after the last line: "Starting plugin: unityshell"

Logged in, started CompizConfig Settings Manager (ccsm) and found
"Ubuntu Utility Plugin" it is check marked. Also under Uncategorized
"Unity MT Grab Handles" also check marked.
No other mention of Unity.

I logged in to Unity, as admin, and tried tty, There is no response to
the keyboard, thi=us I did not get c command line.
I did log in under Gnome, executed the command as suggested, I have a
whole list of installation in Terminal , do you want to see that? I
saved it for the next post

Probably there is something wrong in the configurations files in your
home. Can you try to login in your administrator account (using unity)
than switch to a tty (alt+ctlr+1), login in, run the command unity
--replace?

Yes, very much so, there is one question, 258578 and a bug report
1399302, both describe in detail what happened after an upgrade in place
from 14.04 LTS to 14.10.
Subsequently I rebuilt a system from 10.04 LTS through two upgrades and
ended up with 14.04.1 LTS and I have neither panel nor launch
Is this still a problem? Sorry for the late answer but sometimes bugs
get lost!

I do have access to a command line, all I need is the required commands
to start Unity and keep it running.

I ended up sending the motherboard for repairs. This has been repaired
and installed as of today. I also installed a brand new 120GB SSD upon
which I installed a newly downloaded versio
Having created this apport I expect a quick reaction to the problem as
well as a solution.
This may sound impertinent, but I have been hanging on this for over a
month, that time includes repairs to the motherboard.
