My basic issue is that I love the Unity dock, and the Ubuntu button that displays the Dash, but I'm not a fan of the global menu. Without the global menu the panel wastes a lot of space. My ideal desktop would use the Unity dock and dash, but instead of the Unity panel would use something like WingPanel ( http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/12/wingpanel-elementarys-slick-new- space-saving-panel/ ) This has the advantage of saved vertical space without the use of the global menu. Allowing the panel to be switched off would increase the ability to innovate on top of the Unity desktop. For those reasons, I'd appreciate a gconf setting that disables the top panel.
