unstructured FM content in the 21st century is really not done, if you ask me.
Converting is fairly easy - we do it all the time - so if you do not have
structured content yet, look in that direction for your best practices.

I have succesfully built expressions with up to 40 conditions, all combined via
a single "not" clause.

Hello Framers,
Adobe asked me to present a series of 7 webinars about various advanced
techniques in FrameMaker. The series title is "Jang's F,M. Circus" and the
unofficial subtitle is "Making FM jump through hoops". The first event was
today, so I apologize for making this anouncement a little
If companies need custom solutions, they can always approach me off-list. I am
certain I can always find a solution for FM-related problems, whether they are
in structured or unstructured documents, or a mix of these.

thing about using structured FM is that this can be programmed without even
having any real content available, so confidentiality issues can easily be
avoided here.

You need to include the paragraph marker at the end of the bulleted or
non-bulleted paragraph in the conditional text. That is not a rule of thumb, it
is simply telling Frame which portion of content (visible or non-visible) to
make conditional. It might help to switch on the display of hidden c
insets were not made editable, as that defeats the purpose of generating
them by an automated process. But they are getting updated automatically when
the entire book is updated.
Let us know whether this method works for you.

And finally, I have started a blog on Automating FrameMaker, in which one
category is reserved for ExtendScript. Not much there yet, but there will be
more and I think it is useful for beginning scriptures.

That is my 2 cents in this discussion. I do agree with Scott that going via
true XML might be a good solution, but only if the authors are not pulled out
of their comfort zone too much.
