I currently use (for ease of administration) Webmin with the LDAP
plugin. It works quite nicely, but involves having to login to a
separate interface.

Those requests are indeed in place. I believe it would require the current
code to go through some major changes
(more OOP design) so that LDAP for example can be managed seamlessly. I
