Try this:
move the component library config file from its new (1.4.0) location
back to its old (pre 1.4.0):
mv /usr/sha

I've been using gschem in Debian for a while now, and I've never had problems.
I recently updated the entire gEDA suite, and now when I start gschem, I get
the following on the Log window:

That's not some "dwim gone wrong", it probably means you shorted them
together somewhere.

disable this, and if so what is the setting?
