Ok, Thank you for the advice on mounting the cdrom but now the installer runs
but it dies
right after it asks for the root password to install gettext, which is already
installed.

it exactly like it was a disk. The mount command
looks something like this:
mount -o loop -o exec /path/to/installer.iso /media/cdrom
/media/cdrom/installer --log
You may want to spend some time reading the man page for the mount
command.

Let KDE automount the CD and see where it went.
Check the contents of /etc/mtab while the CD is mounted:

Check your filesystem for a directory called /mnt/cd or /mnt/cdrom etc.

When I put the CD into the drive KDE automounts it and asks if I want to
autorun, but when I click yes it doesn't start the install. If I try to kick
off the install manually I get a permission denied error. >From
