Problem fixed
The only thing that worked was to:
apt-get purge libgeda-common
apt-get install gEDA
Then reboot the system
Keep an eye on the suggested packages
apt-get install geda-utils pcb libgd-tools
I would not suggest fooling with libgd2xpm-dev or libgd2-noxpm-dev
