It is likely you have a footprint with a name that includes a "-" or
some other character that m4 is not

I submitted a patch for that waaay before I even had comm
I removed the blank line at the end of each file and I'm not getting
any read garbage errors. Now it's stalling and shows the following (I
noticed after the read garbage errors it's stalling at that point with
the blank lines in also):

Try removing the blank line at the end of each file.
