I posted a solution to this on bugs.gentoo.org, but here it is again for you.
If you append -mno-sse2 to the flags, it will compile with -march=pentium4.
I hand edited the gcc-version if statement to 3.3 instead of 3.2 and it
compiled
fine.

Blindly merging new config files is extremely dangerous. As much of a pain

a K6-2 is a i586, you'll need to fix your CHOST. On a K6-2 that I have, I
use:
CHOST="i586-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march=k6-2 -O3 -pipe "
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
I ran into the same illegal instruction problem until I noticed
A k6-2 is a i586, change your CHOST setting. I ran
into this same issue.
