Hi Andrius,

I wasn't aware that there were adult content ads being served at all. Can
you please supply a URL so I can take a look? If you don't want to supply to
the entire group, send to M-A staff at [email protected]. I'm not
keen on adjusting aspects of individual messages because that is labor
intensive, but we will look at problem cases and possibly make global
adjustments when appropriate. Especially if any of this is spam-related.

Hello,
it would be nice if I could turn off ads on certain messages. Some of
them attract sex-related google ads. They make the authors of these
messages feel very uncomfortable seeing their content used for such
advertising.

Kind regards

I understand and accept. If that's the case, then I specifically
suggest:

Logo and list name at upper left, both linking to the list info page.

Your banner and logo at upper right, both linking to your home page.

Gets your name out there more consistently, gives a uniform layout
across all lists, and is less confusing, I think, for end users.

Thank you. I hope they do.

I wish I could! I can write simple HTML, but I have not been able to
wrap my mind around CSS.

This one requires too much per-list thinking; we'll only consider changes
that are fully automatic. The other parts sound reasonable to me, but it
would be nice to know if other people have the same preference. Logos are
done with a tiny bit of CSS., just in case some impatient web programmer
wants to help out.

a#mail-archive-logo { float: left; top: 2px; left: 2px;
margin: 0px; padding: 0px;
background-image: url(/[email protected]/logo.png); background-repeat:
no-repeat;
width: 273px; height: 50px; }
#listlink { float: right; margin: 0 75px 0 0; }

Thanks, Mike. I'll catch up with the other Mail Archive guys to chat over
some of these ideas. Your point about the links on the list name & logo
sound valid.

Re: Improvements

2010-02-05 Thread M.G. Devour
Dear Jeff,

Now that my logo is up, I see the top-of-page arrangments have changed:

My logo is top-left and links to the mail-archive home page.

The list-name text has shifted to the right, and links to the info page.

If I had my druthers, my logo would link to the info page, and the list
name text would disappear (actually, revert to the default mail archive
banner, given its location), since the logo displays the name of the
list.

Since it's a (usually) one-time configuration at setup, it might not be
too onerous to code it so you can tweak the banner arrangment on a
per-list basis depending on what makes sense.

The logic could be pretty simple:

The list logo, if it exists, links to the info page.

The list name links to the info page; optionally not displayed if made
redundant by the nature of the logo.

The mail-archive banner and logo remain constant at upper right, both
link to your home page.

I think the result would be logical and consistent across all lists.

Thanks! All nitpicks aside, things are looking great.

Re: Improvements

2010-01-31 Thread M.G. Devour
As I'm evaluating things I've just started using the message display
interface with this list and there are a couple of things that might
make things easier, for me at least...

It may be a nightmare to make it work with all e-mail clients and
webmail setups, I don't know, but a larger selection of Reply button
options would be nice: Reply to Author or List, with or without
quoting... Then I could have easily replied to your 'Improvements'
thread, now that I'm a member, even though it was posted a few days
before I joined the list.

In addition, having the option of disabling the reply button(s) would
perhaps head off some complaints. I'm a little worried how some of my
members will react when random non-members send them messages after
finding their posts in a web search. We're a comfortable little
community, and having "strangers" contacting them could be unsettling.

The other thing I would enjoy would be a control to let me expand the
entire thread in the post display. It would be simple enough for threads
of reasonable size, though longer ones would require some cleverness to
handle page breaks in some fashion.

It would make reading threads faster, with less use of the back button
or need to open additional tabs/windows.

Anyway, you asked for input; those are a few ideas based on my initial
reaction to the interface.

Be well,

Mike D.

Jeff,

Thanks very much for the reply--it's great news that this is now covered
by a spec (RFC 5064, btw ;-) . I started skimming through that--I
guess the key thing afaic is the ability to specify the exact location
in the archive when the list server first issues the post, which, from
what I understand, it can do.

BTW, I don't really "run" any mail lists (well, except one on yahoo), so
I don't personally use any list server software, but I will start
spreading the word that this spec exists and try to get some list
servers interested in using it.

Hi Randy,

Bad news first. It is not such a great idea for mail-archive.com to re-send
mail. That's asking for trouble with respect to abuse and spammers. On the
good side, we can get the same effect if the mail server is in cahoots with
the archiving service. A specification (RFC5604) is in place and
implementation is done on our side. The hard and slow part is cajoling list
server software to participate. What list server software do you use?

This is something I brought up once before (several years ago), but I'll
try again ;-) What I'd really like (it probably means that you'd have
to "host" a mail list to do this)--I'd like posts to the list to be
sent out with the URL for the email in the archives.

In other words, all posts to a list would go to you first, be put in the
archives, and then sent out to the list including the URL of the email
in your archive... (Well, actually, the archived post should also
include the URL.)

Improvements

2010-01-26 Thread Jeff Marshall
Hello Gossip subscribers,

We're always working to improve the service The Mail Archive provides, and
we realized that it's been a while since we got any suggestions for the site
from users. We always intended the list to be a discussion forum for the
list rather than us just sending you annual updates. If you're subscribed
to Gossip, it probably means you're nearly as interested in mailing list
archiving as we are.

So here's your big chance to give us some ideas to improve The Mail Archive
experience. What do you like about the site now? What could be better?
What new services would you like to see? We happen to have some free time
and a whole lotta' network bandwidth, so we'd love to hear your ideas on
what we should be improving or adding.

All of your thoughts, inputs, or mad ramblings would be appreciated. Feel
free to post to Gossip if you want an open discussion, or mail us directly
at [email protected] if you'd prefer.

As always, thanks for using and contributing to the archive!
