Dr Ruby, All places I've worked at use similar as well. Also you need a second patient identifier as blocks and slides are considered an aliquot from the original specimen. Such as last name, date of birth etc And it doesn't have to be S, it can be any prefix meaningful to your

This is a format that I would recommend. To expand on that, using an "alpha" character for the part and " numeric for the cassettes makes better sense because there are few cases that have more than 26 parts (causing AA, AB, AC labeling rare), but there are many parts that have more than 26 casset
