Good Morning and Happy Friday 🙂
I am looking to see if anyone has any information or recommended websites they
could share with me on Telepathology as far as getting things set up and
running. Looking for validation work-up, policies and training/competency

Can non-grossing Histotech's gross and perform frozen sections and daily
grossing via telepathology? The pathologist would be at a different location
but guide the histotech to cut tissue via an Elmo Camera.
Any and all comments would be appreciated.

We are being asked to provide evaluation of EUS (Endoscopic Ultra Sound)
specimen from a remote location. We are provided with a microscope and
a laptop, does anyone know of a simple way to capture and transmit
images back to the pathology lab?
Thank you.

There is a nice publication on validation of WSI on their site, similar to

In the US, FDA has designated the WSI instruments as Class I and, to date, no
company has received approval/clearance for use. Until the FDA issue is
resolved, the use of WSI for primary diagnosis is prohibited. Outside the US,

I seem to remember there is a rule somewhere that primary diagnosis can only be
made using a glass slide. As to chapter and verse, I don't know.
However there are reports in the literarature that it has been tried out for
F/S in Alaska and Finland.

Dissection for frozen sections is a high complexity task, there may be an issue
with the
histologist. I am not so sure about usnig telepathology for the pathologist to
ID where to
take the section. This is touchy and I would hate to put the tech in the
position if there
was an error.

We have used a WebEx session before. The remote site projects the microscopic
image onto their desktop then shares the desktop. We also have one account
that has an IP addressable microscope. This costs more but

Are any of your labs using telepathology for frozen sections? If so, what
company are you working with?

Okay, it's Friday so I have to write that my first thought was

We have several surgicenters which our pathologists must travel to perform
frozen sections a couple of times a week. We are looking into a telepathology
system in which a PA would travel to the surgicenter, prepare the specimen and
transmit the image (live) to the pathologist in their office.
