If your iMac is powered up and running especially a linux OS and you
don't see a light on the port of the router its plugged into its more
than likely a hardware issue. The light just shows there's a device
connected if there's no light the router isn't seeing the device. The
only hardware involved is the port on the router, the ethernet cable,
and the port on the iMac. Since the port on the router is known to
work (you had another machine plugged into it), and you've tested the
ethernet cable the only thing left is the port on the iMac.

Now if the light is on on the router its a software issue. For ubuntu
you would need to look at the startup logs to see if its initializing
the ethernet port. If it is you should see something that says eth0
and gives the driver its using. You need to make sure its correct
driver (I'm not sure what this iMac would use you can probably find
out by doing a google). If its the wrong one you'll need to compile
and install the correct driver and use that driver. If its the correct
driver then you'll want to look up this guide
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-ubuntu-linux-convert-dhcp-network-configuration-to-static-ip-configuration.html.
This will allow you to setup a Static IP. By default it should have
been setup to use DHCP. The configuration file it notes should show if
its set for DHCP or not.
