My thanks to all for the very valuable insights and suggestions. The fundamental problem resolved itself with no action required on my part, partly because I had misunderstood the original directive and partly because I awoke to the fact that my wife's work computer is only five miles away and fully accessible to me for the one thing I (thought I) had to do immediately.
