I had this exact problem. It is because the driver needs to be upgraded. You
must uninstall the old driver first! Then install the one for 10.4. After that
it should work fine, although you do need to restart and let it find the wifi
adapter all over again.

I believe apple released an update concerning this problem. I had an
old imac G3 that had been set incorrectly and an automatic update
fixed this issue.
