Make sure you are using the getImage() from the Toolkit class and not the Applet
class. The Applet class only supports getImage() for a URL. I couple things to
try:
i = getToolkit().getImage( "houses.gif" );
-- or --
i = getImage( new URL( "file:////houses.gif" ));
