We (and some of my customers CTOs) always created parallel Labs.
If you think about it, you *should* already have the spare parts
required for production, using them in the Lab enabled us to insure:

. They are readily available

PS: Security wise we're fine, anything related to management is

their initial work done during the 4.x days, switching
might have been a better financial choice.
Device support wouldn't be an issue pretty much all the worthy
stuff works on both... and with virtualization its not an really issue
anymore.

PS: In our case it is our fiber bundles and we didn't need to
invest in DWDM ... but its the same idea. For years an associate of
mine implemented a very large deployment of OOB over DWDM and Cisco L2
switches with 0 downtime.

Here is an production version (thx Phil) but on QFX-5100 and MX960
(and MX104 before).
This works for about 200ish circuits so far...
We had a bunch of issue with those which can lead to unresponsive
interface... So depending on your situation you may have to reboot the
switch :(
Then you should open a ticket with the JTAC.

We had issues with port 1 of 3 switches, it was more power related
than a physical issue in our case.
Once we replaced then with SRs the issue went away but only 1 set
lasted, and it was the 0,2 aeX.

finally stable with the preferred
release of Junos, TLDR: You cannot get out of the Spine/Leaf paradigm
(contrary to initial documentation which also showed full mesh and
linked routing engines). Also there was an issue with 1 forwarding-options.
