After apt autoremove and downloading the appimage for Qt5 digikam starts
normally. I overlooked the small print on the download page and clicked the
first link. Thanks for the pointers.

The crashes between digiKam 8.0.0 to about 8.2.0 were related to the SSE
detection at compile time and runtime for the QtAVPlayer.

I use also Kubuntu 24.04 here and the problem is not reproducible at all.

1/ Please try with last 8.5.0 appimage.
2/ run digikam in gdb and capture the backtrace :
