https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=452219 --- Comment #88 from Lassi Väätämöinen --- I am only able to reach 50% framerate on external screens with my Intel/NVIDIA hybrid graphics laptop (Lenovo P15 Gen2). Sounds plausible that it might be at least partly an NVIDIA driver issue, since I had mismatch in the NVIDIA open kernel module version vs. the proprietary driver part (550.100 vs. 550.170). When I had those mismatched components, the FPS capped at 30FPS, regardless of what the screen refresh rate was: 60Hz, 100Hz, 144Hz - it was all the time 30FPS. Once the driver components were reinstalled to matching versions (550.100), the FPS behavior went back to the 50% thing. Switch the laptop to only use the dedicated NVIDIA GPU if you laptop allows it (mine does). In this case everything worked fine since both the internal screen and the external screen were directly running from the dedicated GPU. Of course that this eliminates any of the power saving advantages that the hybrid mode may have. 2. I was able to use the nvidia-smi command to ramp up the NVIDIA GPU clock speeds. If I ramp them up to the maximum the performance issues disappear. Of course that, once again, this will probably have an impact on power consumption. These are just workarounds. What we really need is a proper fix. I believe that (pat of) the problem is that the iGPU does all the rendering and composting by default. Therefore, the iGPU must also renders what is shown on the external screen but it must be copied from the iGPU frame buffer to the dGPU framebuffer. If the NVIDIA GPU is not properly managed, its clock speeds are just too slow and it is unable to receive all that data in a timely manner. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[kwin] [Bug 452219] Low fps and high CPU usage on external monitor connected to NVIDIA when default GPU is Intel
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=452219 --- Comment #79 from Lucas Lima --- Chiming in since I'm still very invested in this. I'm also using the Nvidia 555 driver, and I believe the issue mentieoned here: > On KDE6 (kwin 6.0.4.1), wayland session with AMD radeon 780m IGPU and > NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Mobile DGPU and nvidia-open 555 driver on my external > monitor connected to nvidia HDMI port I have low fps equal to half of screen > refresh rate. Is caused by the usage of the new firmware. Kinda off topic, but to fix it add nvidia.NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0 to the boot command line options. Now back to the issue, since it was mentioned that it would be fixed in a future driver release, even with the new driver things have not improved. After adding the mentioned command line above, I'm back to the same performance from 550 when using a external monitor in the port attached to the Nvidia card. I'm currently using the kwin-explicit-sync package from Arch even: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/kwin-explicit-sync, and also setting the OGL_DEDICATED_HW_STATE_PER_CONTEXT=ENABLE_ROBUST to /etc/environment, but that also does nothing. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=452219 --- Comment #48 from Zamundaaa --- Yes. That is a NVidia driver bug, it busy waits on OpenGL context switches and uses more CPU that way than actually copying the buffer would take. I've been told it should fixed in a driver release coming out in January or February -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
