[Bug 139954] Improve labels for [M] and [T] in AutoCorrect Options tab and add labels in Localized Options tab
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=139954 --- Comment #11 from V Stuart Foote --- The [T] typing corrections apply as the strings being entered are being parsed by the edit shell. The [M] modify corrections are applied against existing paragraph(s) as selected (or a full document selection) as the ODF is parsed/reparsed by user action--so yes it requires an Apply action. From Tools -> Autocorrect "Apply" .uno:autoFormatApply or the "Apply with edits" .uno:autoFormatRedlineApply which triggers tracked changes UI. Existing on menu or customize assign a keyboard shortcut. So, as an example of a modify action, create a dummy text and add a few empty paragraphs. Then check enable the AutoCorrect Options [M] "Remove blank paragraphs" feature. Apply it and watch the empty paragraphs be stripped. Any [M] actions can be user configured to meet their workflows. Ability to control the two "flavors" of autocorrection remains a fully functional feature useful in reflowing and "modifying" existing content. Seems more a RTM type issue if folks really don't get it. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
[Bug 139954] Improve labels for [M] and [T] in AutoCorrect Options tab and add labels in Localized Options tab
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=139954 --- Comment #10 from Eyal Rozenberg --- The current state of this dialog is unacceptable, and the [M] and [T] column titles specifically. The opening comment for this bug remains valid. (In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #8) > IMHO suitable to task and fully intuitive. With no need to change anything. [M] and [T] are fully intuitive? Come one, be serious. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
[Bug 139954] Improve labels for [M] and [T] in AutoCorrect Options tab and add labels in Localized Options tab
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=139954 --- Comment #9 from Neil Roberts --- I completely disagree, it is not clear at all. Typing is literally a way of modifying the text. If I put the cursor into an existing paragraph and start typing then I am literally “modifying existing text”, but that is not what [M] is referring to. In that case it is the [T] checkbox that is relevant because it is still about typing. The [M] checkbox specifically refers to clicking the ”AutoCorrect -> Apply” menu item. I think it would be much clearer if the label had the word ”apply” in it. ”Modify” is so vague that it can apply just as much to typing as it can to the ”apply” menu item. You can’t claim that it is intuitive after everybody on the bug report has said that they didn’t understand what the checkbox does without further explanation. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

[T] is while *typing* to enter completely new text. Assume the M & T can be localized, and that the strings shown on dialog are already localized as l10n team chooses. IMHO suitable to task and fully intuitive. With no need to change anything. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

Sounds like busywork > for l10n. Well, I think it very much needs changing seeing as all three of us on the bug report didn’t understand it. The “busywork” done by the translators will help speakers of the target languages too who presumably currently have an equally incomprehensible translation. > And "When applying AutoCorrect to an existing text” seems to me > not more clear than "Replace while modifying existing text". I have to strongly disagree. For me, “modifying” and “typing” are basically the same thing whereas “applying” is clearly different. It is also the same word that is used in the relevant menu option so it is much more likely that the user will make the link between the two. https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=139954 Neil Roberts changed: What|Removed |Added CC||[email protected] --- Comment #4 from Neil Roberts --- I didn’t understand what the [M] does either. My initial guess based on the wording was that it’d be something like if you are editing in the middle of a paragraph rather than typing at the end of one. That is not the case though. The help text explains it more clearly: “You can also apply [M] AutoCorrect options to a selection or a whole document of existing text by using Tools - AutoCorrect - Apply.” I think we should change the explanation of [M] to “[A] When applying AutoCorrect to an existing text”. I think it’d be really helpful to have the word “apply” in there because that is the name of the menu option used to invoke the operation. We should get rid of “modify” because that is very vague and maybe change the [M] to [A] for “apply”. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

The column width has space for one character or icon and it's hard to imagine that any of this makes the procedure clear. What we can and should do is to add a tooltip - and an extended tooltip.
