[Bug 164725] Feature Request: Implement Guided tour of the application and all the major features
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164725 --- Comment #17 from John Mills --- I think what we should be mindful of with this request is that this is a quality of life improvement for our users by providing a guided tutorial on basic functionality in LibreOffice. Also it is completely optional to undertake it, there is no compulsion before you start using the software. To me the ideal place for this is an additional single screen in the new user dialog, you simply ask the user id they would like to learn more about how the software is used. If they select no then nothing happens, yes then you introduce the tutorial that they are free to exit from at any time. This is user empowerment in my mind. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164725 --- Comment #16 from Eyal Rozenberg --- (In reply to Tex2002ans from comment #15) > Strong −1. > > Agree with Comment 4 and Comment 5 (and the maintainability problems below). As already explained, it does not need to replace the first-start dialog. > This kind of thing much better dedicated towards video tutorials. A video is passive, not interactive. Also, people can always make videos about LibreOffice, so that possibility does not preclude a tutorial. Also you said you agreed with comment 4 about the need for this to be customizable. A video is even less customizable. > > Like the fantastic "Beginner"/"Basics" videos for Word/Excel/Microsoft > Office by: > > - Kevin Stratvert > - Leila Gharani Which you will not find within MS Office apps. > If the user wants or needs that, they can hunt it down themselves. Ah, no, that's exactly it. Expending non-technical newbie users to hunt down things themselves is a non-starter. They will not. If anything, not starting the tutorial by default is already a weak argument against having this at all. But if it's on the Help menu, that's something at least. > But to shove this in the face of all users That's not what's proposed. > (and trying to MAINTAIN such a > thing with Normal/Tabbed/variant UIs + across languages/OSes), no. Maintenance is indeed a challenge here. However - it should be implemented in such a way that: * there is no per-OS version. * no frequent changes are necessary (e.g. renders as overlay over the UI rather) * only two UI variants at most are catered two: Normal and Tabbed (and maybe start just with one of them) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164725 --- Comment #15 from Tex2002ans --- Strong −1. Agree with Comment 4 and Comment 5 (and the maintainability problems below). - - - This kind of thing much better dedicated towards video tutorials. Like the fantastic "Beginner"/"Basics" videos for Word/Excel/Microsoft Office by: - Kevin Stratvert - Leila Gharani 10 or 15 minutes of just explaining the UI and clicking through the very simple steps, and showing some features a brand-new user might need. - - - If the user wants or needs that, they can hunt it down themselves. But to shove this in the face of all users (and trying to MAINTAIN such a thing with Normal/Tabbed/variant UIs + across languages/OSes), no. Handholding is usually best mixed with audio and video at the same time too, so you can: - SEE/HEAR where a user is clicking. - Follow along (and THEIR SCREEN "matches yours exactly" too). - Slow down, speed up, skip or rewind parts of the video as needed too. - - - So instead, it would probably be best to dedicate time towards creating tutorials like: - LibreOffice Writer for Beginners - LibreOffice Calc Tutorial for Beginners - Top 15 LibreOffice Writer Tips and you can follow a similar playbook as those other massively popular Microsoft/Google Docs video tutorials too. - - - Side Note: And remember, there are 4 major types of Documentation: - Tutorials = Learning-Oriented - ^ This is the kind we're talking about here! - How-To Guides = Problem-Oriented - Discussions = Understanding-Oriented - Reference = Information-Oriented For a breakdown, see the info/resources I linked in my 2025 post: - https://old.reddit.com/r/libreoffice/comments/136b8ni/fonts_embedding_what_those_options_actually_do/jnbnerj/ And super "Beginner" type stuff is a whole different ballgame... because you have to REALLY REALLY simplify things, and you can't assume any sort of knowledge or overload them with technical gobbledeegook. (You'll have to pretend this person has never seen or interacted with a spreadsheet before!) :P -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

I'm not sure that arrangement would be very useful. If you have to know what functionaliy you need help for, and where to find the tour for that functionality, then - maybe you already know enough not to need to the tour to begin with. I would say that: * We should have a single tour (per module), at least for starters; * If we didn't have a welcome dialog - the tour should have started automatically (with opt-out), or suggested prominently and in-your-face. * With the welcome dialog - I'm not so sure whether it's not burdensome to also have the user take a tour. Probably still appropriate... I guess. * At the very least, the tour could be the first or second item on the help menu, and something that you easily notice in whatever you see when you press F1 the first time. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

So, marking as UNCONFIRMED again for now. > > But Sahil, please Heiko's comment #5... sry, was a bit busy. 1. ux wise this makes sense to me, a dialog isn't enough to walk the user through the interface and what's where. 2. implementation is a different issue, how hard would it be to implement, how flexible would it be... i don't know. 3. we should not close it though. let's say it's implemented, then we can have a list of walkthroughs and then when the user says "how do i do that", we can simply point them to a walkthrough and they start it, it walks them through the process of using certain functionality in libreoffice and they got a more interactive form of help. what i said above is just an extension of the concept i request for in this ticket. it's not important whether we show it on first start or later on-demand, that can be decided in a design meeting and i don't mind it being disabled by default. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

Certainly not... it's just that it doesn't make sense to trigger it automatically after the first-startup dialog. [Bug 164725] Feature Request: Implement Guided tour of the application and all the major features
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164725 --- Comment #3 from Eyal Rozenberg --- (In reply to V Stuart Foote from comment #1) > Existing online-help [1] and published guides [2] are sufficient. Help is tedious and most people won't be bothered to read it. Many of them are likely to guess what the UI does or just give up on it before actually reading the help. As for the published guide - statistically, users don't know that it even exists. (And I am doubtful more than a few of them would ever "read the book".) But I do agree that this may require some maintenance to keep up-to-date - because changes to the UI would occasionally (often?) mean changes to the tour. So that's an argument against. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
[Bug 164725] Feature Request: Implement Guided tour of the application and all the major features
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=164725 --- Comment #2 from Eyal Rozenberg --- A tour of the UI would likely be useful for newbies who have not used a similar app before; and may be useful for people who are switching from a similar app but with somewhat different UI (e.g. MS Office). However - for some people, it would be an annoyance. There would need to be some balancing between noticeability of the option of taking the tour, and ease of dismissing an offer to take the tour. Also, like I said in the design meeting - implementing such a thing might be an interesting "Summer of Code"-style project. About the contents of the tour: This typically involves... * Highlighting/emphasizing areas of the UI which are being described at the moment, and de-emphasizing somewhat the rest of it. * Tour "tooltips" or other gadget which look distinctly _different_ than the actual app UI, so that the user doesn't mistake the tour for the app itself. * Rather than a focus on explicit "Prev/Next" navigation - specific user _actions_ trigger transitions to the next stop on the tour, i.e. the tour tracks what the user types, where the mouse pointer is or what has been clicked, to trigger transitions. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.

But sounds like a dev mess to try to implement something with acceptable coverage, and then to maintain once operational. Existing online-help [1] and published guides [2] are sufficient.
