I'm leaving this as an unsolved abberation. Pulled almost everything out ( except motherboard and cpu ) and exchanged all hardware.
memory , video card ( pci, agp ), sound card ( isa, pci), nic ( Real tek and 3 com ). At this point, I do not know. I'll move on to another Distribution, Slackware 8.1 has been mentioned recently, so I'll think I'll try it on this computer, see what happens...
