Upon further playing... If I use "xdm" instead of "kdm' in the /etc/sysconfig/
displaymanager file I get a login box ( the boaring X one). When I login to
the terminal KDE gives me many crash messages.

I've read before that sometimes that may be enough. This machine only
has 2x72 pin slots. So I tried another machine with 32meg (2x168 pin
slots) then 80meg Same results.

Edit your /etc/xinetd.d/tftp file, and look for the 'server_args' line.
Change it to read this:
server_args = -s /tftpboot
Then, restart xinetd by doing this:
service xinetd restart
Then, make sure that your vmlinuz-2.4.21-ltsp-1 file exists as
/tftpboot/lts/vmlinuz-2.4.21

I am trying to setup some old computers in a school as ltsp terminals. I
am using redhat 9, with ltsp version 3 and ltsp kernel
vmlinuz-2.4.19-ltsp-1
The problem is that in two of the machines the lan card is not getting
detected at a later stage. The lan cards are of Dlink DFE538 TX make
