I would guess that your problem is related to the mouse.
in XFree86, if the mouse isn't detectetd properly, then the keyboard
will appear locked too.
Maybe it doesn't like your USB->PS/2 adapter. Can you just plug the USB
cable directly into a USB port on your workstation ?
