I had the same problem with my 486DX and WD90c33 card [western
digital], capable of bpp 8 and 800x600.

Do this to /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf file :
[ws001]
       XSERVER       = XF86_XVGA
       X_COLOR_DEPTH = 8
       X_VIDEORAM    = 512
       X_MODE_0      = 800x600 [try without this 1st]
       ...
       ...
       ...

You will likely get 800x600 and 256 color [8bit]. Hope this work for
