hello guys.
A question to our gurus:
Which parts are interchangable between Japanese NEC PC-8201 and European / US NEC PC-8201a
As i know, keyboard is a bit different and ROM is also not interchangable.
indeed, thats interesting. i also have an silver 8201 and round sockets.
i think the flat sockets a more "modern", they are cheaper in production and easier to handle, than the round ones...

With new capcitors etc. I am NEC PC-8201 user, all this Thru-Hole chips

The simplest implementation of 80c85 is MiniMax 8085 by Sergey Kiselev.
It has a very small amount of chips and is easy to build. It has also extension port for connecting keyboard and display.
But for ROM exist only TinyBasic and mon85
I bought 5 of this MAX232ACPE from China on eBay for my Max 8085
Project.
3 of 5 was getting very hot and "have burned" somehow.
I took an old TI MAX232N and anything was fine.

Thanks for the Info, Jeff.
No, i have no leaking caps on my
on a few PC-8201/A computers. I have not seen one
that needed recapped. The TRS-80 Model 100 and Olivetti M10 are a
different story, they all need recapped.
Do your capacitors appear to be leaking or do you suspect they are
faulty?

Hello Friends!
Have someone already did a recapping job on the NEC PC-8201 or PC-8201A

I am searching for a starting point, or simple table sheet which
capacitors / voltage / capacity should be used ?
Any help is welcome.
Thanks

Dear Model T / NEC collegues!
What i noticed holding a couple of NEC PC-8201 and PC-8201A in my
hands, that many have a strange display issues:
Unit working fine, after some time display is getting blank and i can't
see anything on the LCD.
After switch off/switch on - its fine again.
I noticed t
cycle though. Take it apart so that you can
measure the power supply voltages. Measure the +5 and -5V when it is
working properly and then when the LCD goes blank.

Thanks for the info, John.
I try to find a solution for keeping my PC-8201A intact in the next
years. Of course, 3,6V NiMH Battery is much better comparing to
original 3,6V NiCd one.
But even NiMH can leak, and i want to minimise risk of mainboard
failure.
I will see how it performs in a couple of
Good evening collegues!

Now i ask me, if this mod is kosher, or should i choose another NiMh
Barrel Battery with 3,6V ?
Thanks

3.6v rating of NiMH is
above what LiMnO2 wants (3.3) so I would strongly recommend going back
to NiMh.

Hello collegues.
I got an Japanese NEC PC-8201.
While its working, i can't adjust lcd contrast.
I tried already change lcd and power board, but it didnt help.
Problem is somewhere on the mainboard.
I removed the round black part for ajusting lcd contrast, cleaned it and put
back on.
Didn't help.
