Hello,
I developed a CANopen HAL module for machinkit working on BBB. Not
every function of CANopen is implemented at this moment. BBB is the

I agree entirely. For one-off or low volume stuff, the hardware costs
become much less important. Speed of development is key.
If a proof of concept works, it can be pushed into cheaper hardware for
mass consumption.
If software developer cost is $100/hr to produce a proof of concept,

Siemens had some integrated Servo/Drive units. You ran power to them
along with a network connection and that was all that was required. I
think the bigger ones were in the 1-2 kw range. They were not very
popular at the time (10+ years ago). But I would not count that idea
out yet.
I don't know what "cheapest" really means but converting between PWM and
Analog is pretty common.
But the software would need to create the PWM signal.
Check out Adafruit etc to find PWM to Analog converters.I think that
Mesa sells them as well.
Personally I think I would just save your m

For a one-off, stick with what is known to work.

I was in a plant where they make a large number of boards on multiple
lines and I looked at their automatic test fixtures that probe the
boards... and all of them were wire wrapped! So maybe not "that"

I don't know how much money you want to throw at this exercise, but I
would go even further than John and suggest a full blown drive, not just
a driver board. You will have your hands full working with hardware and
software as it is. You can buy brushless AC drives and motors that can

What was the cost of the Windows Mach4 option?
