Have you tried the universal translator instead of the import function.
It usually works for me.

I import DXF to MI, without the import utility, I use Import File from the Table Menu
and neved had problems with that. other thing
that you must take care, is the version of the dxf file, it must be DXF version 13, or
12 to work right, may be this is your
problem...

I think one of the problems may be the dxf you are importing is from a later
source version then your MI therefore MI feels a bit inadequate. (Its a bit
like trying to import a document created in Word 2000 into Word 6 it just
doesn't happen).
A way around it is to try using universal transl
