The manual for the Sharp MD-MS702 says that you can turn its beep off; this is
presumably true of all newer Sharp models, a
Stop in your local best buy , circuit city or similar store, and go to
the camcorder section. Look for the camcorder accessories, for a shot
gun mike and you can record from a distance and not get the side noise.

are selling batteries for all MD players at a "discounted" price at present.
Li-Ion 702 batteries are 20 quid, the rest are between 14 and 23 quid.

Luke I have limited experience with Sony md's. I heard one in a store
playing some R&B. But I have an 831 and my coworker have a 722 and we both
love sharp's quality. I listen to Classical, Rock, Pop, alternative, and a
little rap and the highs and bass and overall quality of the sound is near

so IMO the best options for rec-pause(or lack of it are)
1. slide for immediate recording, OR slide and hold for record-pause(like
the Aiwa models)
2. slide for immediate recording
3. rec-pause with time-machine recording(even just 2 secs, but this may have
an adverse effect on batter
