Haven't had a chance to try this yet: http://www.url.ru/~copah/CDReader.htm It's a plugin for the Apollo, Sonique and Winamp audio players. By the looks of it, it's like ripping a CD in realtime and feeding it directly to the soundcard. Thus if you've got a soundcard with a digital output (and no proper CD player with one), you could play the CD back on that rather than having to rip it first, saving time when you're recording to MD.
