>Can anyone explain why the MD hasn't been developed and promoted as a very >general data format? 1) RIAA restrictions cauused Sony to make MD Data incompatible with MD audio. This is enforced by firmware in the drive. MD audio discs will not record in an unmodified MD data drive. MD audio discs are now very affordable, while MD data discs have remained (artificially) expensive. 2) MD data is comparitively slow. Due to the fact that the magnetic recording head contacts the disk, like a floppy, it cannot spin at speeds necessary for fast access. (Zip and 120MB superfloppy drives have flying heads, as well as hard drives, allowing much faster disk rotation.) Maybe an MD with a flying record head could be developed. Maybe not... ----------------------------------------------------------------- To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
