The unbalanced RCA connector is S/PDIF digital. The center pin is "hot" and the
outside
of the connector is ground. The signal is connected between "hot" and ground.
The XLR connector is AES/EBU digital. The signal is between pin 2 and 3
Corrections-
Balanced is not digital - Balanced is a type of analog
connection. However, an AES-EBU digital connection uses the
same XLR cable for transfering. But this does not mean that the
two are the same.
Unbalanced is also not digital - It is a coaxial analog

The RCA digital output is coaxial, not optical, so you would need an
expensive converter to be able to use the optical in on your MD recorder.
Perhaps they already have something like that in the radio station though.
