Not hypothetical, at all. If you record from a mono microphone, it's
possible to get twice the capacity.

I don't know any MiniDisc recorder (except maybe the MZ-R1) that can't

Thanks for all the comments to confirm what I suspected, that the mono
recording mode was compatible in all MD units, otherwise they were
shooting-the-media-in-the-foot so to speak.

premastered MD, back to a time when mono was not

FWIW, I have recorded quite a number of mono discs - filled them up with
old mono vinyl and mono radio recordings.
To have almost instant acces
it would also be great for audiobooks...
I usually record mine to MD for convenience. hmm. 9 tapes
or 5 MDs, tough decision :-)
