Peter,

<satire>
I would love to see this list split into 2 lists. MySQL-Newbies and
MySQL-non-newbies. Non-newbies would be either an invitation-only list or
you have to pass a test to get in. (The test would contain questions that
are all in the manual, we don't care if you know, we care if you will bother
to look-up!)

One of the requirements of being on MySQL-non-newbies, other than the RTFM
thing, would be that you have to help at least 1 newbie a day. If you go 5
days without getting a gold star from a newbie then you get kicked form the
non-newbies club.

Ok, so I'm being silly. :) But let me slip into serious for a moment by
saying that if we split the list then it will lose it's value. The value of
the list, and the community, is to help grow the community base.

A quick note to newbies. Welcome to the community! (and I mean that) If you
are tired of seeing responses to your questions that simply say RTFM...then
R!T!F!M! The only reason you get a message like that is you asked a question
(and wasted everyone's bandwidth) that could have been answered with 5
minutes of surfing. (Remember the M is just a web page!)

Note to the non-newbies. Remember that you (and I) were once newbies.
Remember how bad we felt when we couldn't figure out why the select
statement didn't work until someone told us to "RTFM, you forgot the
semi-colon at the end!".

In closing, RTFM messages serve an important purpose in our community. They
are there to let newcomers know that we are always glad to help but we
expect you to respect our time and try and figure it out for yourself. If
you can't, just ask.

The above said with a smile,
Cal

This may well be a point which has been raised in the past, but has
there ever been any talk of splitting this list into a
"mysql-for-dummies" and a "mysql-for-people-who-read-the-manual" list
? I'm getting close to unsubscribing due to the enormously large noise
ratio - to be frank, questions such as the following drive me completely
batshit =) Sorry to pick on one particular user - it's just one example
of, what, 6 identical questions in the last forty-eight hours.

regards,

P
