Mandrake 7.1 seems better than the 6.5 version I replaced, but had the
identical problem with the display skewed left. I simply reset the
monitor display and after about 60 seconds it "takes" and seems to be
holding. I had to change resolution to 800X600. Using Amdek 815E
monitor and Erazor Vic
Can you see your zip drive at all or just can't access it? If you don't
see it at all, there is a thread just a couple of days ago that worked
for me. Basically you have to manually enter the drive in the list and
then tell the system to find it. It's a SCSI device on the parallel

Has anyone been successful upgrading the kernel using MandrakeUpdate? I have
tried a number of times, but always end up having to re-install. Any

As you may have seen or missed:
put them in your /etc/aliases file. take a look in there and you will likely
find some aliases pre-defined.
the general format is ALIASNAME=ALIASVALUE (you don't have to capilize.)
one good place to start is from any terminal, type:
"help aliases" if your shell is bash (omit the quotes).

I was just curious if there is a way to turn off dpms for good. I have to
turn it off every time I reboot wich wouldnt be bad but every time I forget
about it the system hangs beyond recovery (bug in the hardware or bios does it
with windows too), and I have to use the power but
I have the EXACT same problem, and I have checked everything. I am connected
to the internet but NO programs can get the information. Perhaps they can't
talk with my modem? any ideas anyone.

This card is actually made by Accton, a division of SMC networks. Use the
rtl8139 driver in linux. this should get the card to work. For more info, go to

Hello! I have noticed when installing mandrake 7 or 7.1 and you
configure a network in the installation process, you cant access the
iInternet using KPPP. What I mean is that when I try to use KPPP, it
keeps reseting when it tries to log on. It doesnt give errors but KPPP
just keeps on redialing

Find the lines follwing Section "Pointer"

Am trying to run the new Drak tools with Mandrake 7.1. All were
installed by rpm and no dependancy problems showed. Drakfont works fine and is a
nice step towards beautifying my desktop.
But, when i try to run the other tools they fail with

the IRQ for ttyS2 to 5. How can I change it and get it to be

Oh yes, forgot to say that I can do 1280x1024, it's done under winslows. I
just can't for the life of me get it going under Linux. Maybe the monitor
wasn't selected properly? Where would I find that info?

I just repartitioned that drive that I was having problems with. I put the swap
partition at the end of the drive and the windows partition at the beginning.
All of my problems have disappeared. Windows always recognizes that drive now.

need to do from command line or in midnight commander
or just go to Gnome ... I use Gnome exclusively for root

The fact that your Viking modem is offered in both a Win and Mac version
leads me to believe that though you tecnically have an external modem it is
still a Win Nomodem.
If it is a real modem it should be listed under devices and in kppp there
would be a listing for acmo.

whenever linux is run, Windows loses it. It is strange. Like I say, it

recommended was a mite to small. So I went for a much larger size. What

mailing list for anyone wanting to be notified when the Linux version is
ready. In the meantime they say that the Windows version works via Wine.

Well what ever the latest package number is. There was 7.0 then 7.01 so in my
frustration I wrote 7.2. So I guess it's really 7

This is not what I have experienced. I can run make as user without a
problem. There must be something wrong with your permiss

I have installed Mandrake Linux 7.1 for the first time. During
installation it detected my external modem, and it did setup my internet connection.
My problem is that when I login into kde desktop, and use kppp tool (there is a
icon on the desktop which says Internet and it looks something
Dennis, that file is just an advertisement, you can kill it. No ill effects.
