After a fresh install of 7.2, I can't seem to access /~username/ webpages.
(I get a 'forbidden' message)
I've changed the /home/username and /home/username/public_html/
directories perms to 755 and the index.html file's perm is 644.
What else might I have to do to enable user web pages.
how can I have a user with ftp access to a specified directory
(inside another user's home dir) but not a shell account?

What's the 'trick' to getting a user dir to work in apache?
I keep getting 'forbidden' no matter what I try.
I've tried to set the user dir at 755, grp=users
the public htm dir is 755 and the index file is 644.
What do you have to do to a default 7.1 install to make ~user work?
ok, I'm a dumbass. I figured it out.
How big does a /boot partition need to be?
I have a toshiba magnia server, with 4 sca hot-swap drive bays (I got
too cheap!)
Back when I installed 7.0, the installer at one point asked if I
wanted to configure RAID, and since I was poor, and only had 1 drive
I chose no.
well, now I just picked up 4 sca drives, and thought I'd wipe the

I need to have cron execute a shell script to download a file. the
file is MMDDYY.zip
I figured out that date +%m%d%y will get me the date in the right
format, but what I can't figure out is how to put that into a command.
I've tried multiple variations of
date +%m%d%y | wget http://somehost

Lemme steer this back onto Linux a bit.
I have a server that's been running happilly on 6.1 & a 2 gig drive for a

What's the easiest way to do that? I'm hoping things like crontabs and

I need to ping a couple of hosts and save the results to a file.
so I figured out:
ping -c3 domain.com > file.txt
Now, how can I ping another host, and append the result to the same file?

Like where?
I'm not doing a new install, it's a running system.
Ok, but here's the deal.
When I do this :rdate -sp time.nist.gov
it sets it correctly to 17:01
but if I restart the box, it reverts back to 10:55
so how do I make it stick?

I can't seem to set my machines time correctly. When I do, it ends up soon
reverting back to GMT, as if it's using a NTP server. How can I set my
machine to use a ntp server to sync it's clock, and also know it's PDT?

I have netatalk running just fine, however, on the mac clients I have an
applescript to mount the drive, and it refuses to mount the drive without me
manually entering the password.
I am assuming this is because somewhere atalkd doesn't like

when you say 'work' what do you mean? If you are interested in email and web surfing
then yeah, go for it. If you want to run any kind of server definitely go for it. if
you want to learn and tinker, go for it.
But if you want to run office programs and games... probably not quite for you.

you can get a rpm from contrib.redhat.com or a mirror
At this point in time, it's reasonable to believe that if it's metal and runs into
your home, you'll be able to connect your computer to the Internet on it. (Personally,
I can't wait for SepticNet)
