The ipchains quick start tutorial or something like that.
Have a look in the Linux Documentaion project.
And yes it is an option in the kernel but it is enabled by default in the newer
kernels.

If so you have no option to change any attributes of the filesystem
-read only.
Check how FAT32 is supported in your kernel version.
