I'm trying to install Mandrake 9.1 on a Starmax 5000 currently running Mac OS 9.1 with 160 Meg of ram. After a bit of trial and error with the bootx settings I got the installer to run, however it seems to only get part way through the hardware identification process and I get a kernal panic error that says the root cannot be run.
The machine has a L2 casche slot processor upgrade card (JoeCard) Browsing the archives, I found reference to possible problems with processor upgrade cards, but nothing certain. Can anyone tell me for sure if disabling the processor upgrade will allow the installer to work? If so, will I be able to enable it afterwards? I can't imagine how slow this machine will be without it. Well, actually I can remember quite well and I don't think it will be pleasant! Further details, the machine has a 20GB IDE hard drive with 2 10GB partitions. SCSI CD ROM, IDE CD-RW and SCSI ZIP. Also installed an ATI Rage 128 video card from a BW G3. I would love to here from anyone who has sucessfully installed mandrake on a StarMax with a processor upgrade. I don't NEED to do this, the max works fine for the kids and has long been replaced for me, but it seems a fitting end for an old friend and a possibly entertaining introduction to Linux :) Regards, Frank
