I do not have a dvd player, but I have heard that it is possible to
use the computer dvd recorder to play dvd movies. Could somebody here
please give me some directions?

Aron, you've got PLF setup (both free and non-free) as sources, right? If not,
do it. Then just:
urpmi mplayer

If you right-click on the xmms console, go Options ->Preferences and
then see the first tab, "Audio I/O Plugins". At the bottom of the box,
