[newbie] Application Runing Problems

Hello, Whenver I connect to the Internet via the modem the applications in Linux don't execute - meaning I can click on the application (via the mouse) and nothing pops up. Would anybody know a fix to this problem? BTW I am using a US Robotics Modem. THANK YOU very Much GOOSE ___
