As for the modem problem, lets hope that you do
not have a 'winmodem' as these are not supported
very well in linux if at all.

The last time I tried it, it worked for me I just did
not download any of thier software, I just took
the DNS numbers and put them into kppp
and I set my browser's home page to
http://home.freewwweb.com and it made out ok.
