booting from alt2 works: the kernel loads. there are a couple of warning
messages during install that i should be using a 2.4 kernel, rather than
2.2. Have you had any problems with this?

I had a similar issue on a machine.
It turned out to be my CD's. I tried new, freshly burned CDs and it worked
fine.
