I'm already running with nolapic because of some issues with my mobo not
playing nice, so no luck there.
There doesn't seem to me to be any disernable difference between running
the one kernel and the other, it's just that the new kernel doesn't work.

... Working kernel! Thanks! I still have some config issues I'm dealing
with but it is very nice to see the 'Uncompressing kernel image ... ' message

(older machine) and all is well. I just purchased a Sharp Zaurus SL5500 and
much to my disappointment it does not talk to my Linux box. I have spent all
day trying to upgrade to the 2.4.18
and you might try a few diferent kernels, it may simply be that one of
those kernels doesn't match your system in some way. i myself have 4
kernels installed but one of them refuses to boot.

I did a stupid thing. I tried to update the Kernel from 2.2.X to 2.2.16
using the Update manager. Little needs to be said -- it didn't work. In fact
my system won't boot anymore. I get a System Panic can't mount root fs on

because if it is "-u" that is the reason you are having problems. You have
to do an "-i" install if you want the kernel to work.

I just finished upgrading the kernel on my machine to 2.2.9. The gory
details are below, but here's the executive summary: (1) make _sure_ you
have a _working_ bootdisk for your system (# mkbootdisk ), (2)
make sure you update /etc/lilo.conf to boot your new kernel, (3) make
sure you run /sbin/li

command prompt and it loaded everything..

packages I downloaded from Mandrake and it worked. Get 2.2.5 from their
site. Beware of problems with printing, as the parralel ports must be
set manually. Read the parport.txt and lpd.text

I had the same problem. At the end all I did was I reinstalled all the
packages I downloaded from Mandrake and it worked. Get 2.2.5 from their
site. Beware of problems with printing, as the parralel ports must be
set manually. Read the parport.txt and lpd.text (or something like

for kernel 2.2.3-ac4 but after upgrading, I cannot use my kppp anymore.
I always had this 'timeout expired' error message even I manage to dial the
server.
Now what is the problem? Script?

I tried the latest ones (after the bug fix). And disaster!!! What u should
know :
(1) The RPMs are merely an install procedure similar to that from the CD(or
whatever). It is not compiled and as a result u get a generic kernel and a
bunch of things done in the background.

interested mainly because of the NTFS support (I'm dual boot between Mandrake
& NT and I wanna mount my NTFS partition), but while I've been reading up on

I tried to upgrade my kernel with the rpms from the mandrake site and it did
not work. I then used the buildkernel script which downloaded the 2.2.5
source and seemed to work fine. The system boots up to login screen fine.
I login as root type startx and it gives me errors that it can not establ
