Well, KDE has noatun, and that works fairly well as an mp3 player.
xmms is also good.

I'm a fairly new newbie as well, but I *can* tell you that NTFS + Linux
are not good together. I don't remember which, but Linux cannot read or
write to it, and the one of those which it CAN do it cannot do well. My
suggestion, if you can, is to reformat/reinstall Windows using FA
