I am an extreme newbie to Linux or any type of Unix, but am very experienced
with Windows networking, and have some minor experience with Netware
networking. As a result, most of my questions will be related to the
differences between methods on the various operating systems. I am NOT a
newbie to networking, just to Linux.

I installed Linux Mandrake 7.1 this afternoon, and all went well. It boots
fine, and loads the KDE without issue.

However, this PC has 2 network adaptors. The first is a 3COM 3C900B, and
the second is an Intel 82557. When I clicked on the "Network Configuration"
under DrakConf, and went in to "Basic Host Information", I see that only
"Adaptor 1" has a "net device".

My first question then is:
How do I activate the second network adaptor (the Intel one) ?

I decided I could deal with that later, and proceeded to configure the first
adaptor for use with my Cable Modem for internet purposes. I entered the
appropriate host name as required by my cable internet provider, and
selected DHCP configuration mode on the first adaptor. Then applied the
changes. I assume that I don't need to enter any other details, as they
should be provided by the DHCP server.

>From the Konsole, I tried to PING the known gateway machine on my service
provider's network (and a few other know public IP addresses), but got a
message indicating that the network was unreachable. The same issue
remained after a complete shutdown and re-start.

My next questions then are:
Where can I see what network protocols are bound to the various network
adaptors?
How can I get a quick report of the active TCP/IP configuration obtained
from the DHCP server?
(like IPCONFIG under WindowsNT or WINIPCFG under Windows9x)
How can I perform an on-the-spot refresh of the TCP/IP configuration from
the DHCP server?

Eventually, I want to use this Linux box as a firewall between my main PC
and my cable internet service.

Thanks in advance.
- James.
